Today Olympus announced their long-awaited OM-D EM-5, the first Olympus Micro 4/3 camera to offer an integrated electronic viewfinder (EVF).

Key features of the E-M5:
  • Even faster autofocus than E-P3
  • New 16MP sensor (probably same one as in Panasonic G3/GX1)
  • Autofocus tracking system which is effective even for subjects moving towards/away from the camera (up until now this has been a weak point for mirrorless cameras)
  • 9.2 FPS sequential shooting (4FPS during AF tracking)
  • 5-axis image stabilization system can compensate for 1) pitching, 2) yawing, 3) horizontal movement, 4) vertical movement, and 5) rotational movement around the optical axis
  • Proven dust-proof and splash-proof technology
  • Tilting 3-inch OLED touch screen
  • 1.4million dot EVF with eye sensor for automatic switching between EVF and rear OLED
  • Two control dials
  • Quiet shutter sound

Ohhhohohoho.

I'm going to be living off cup noodles for the next few weeks.
That $1k price for a fully weather sealed body is REALLY attractive.

The price makes this very competitive. I cannot wait to see the reviews.

Yeah, I am going to start needing to use coupons and perhaps even home hair cuts?

Okay, I know I'm going out on a limb by saying this having never touched or seen this camera yet, but I've had enough experience with Olympus cameras to know what features and designs work and don't work for me by now... and I have to say that from everything I see here this will probably be my favorite Olympus camera yet! it has everything I wanted put together in what seems like the all the right ways.

Too bad I got so many bodies from last year's models though, that I'm not likely to see an OM-D in my camera bag any time soon. :( At least now I have something to strive for, lol... I want this way more than the E-5, as I'm pretty much done with DSLRs and so wanted something that could effectively take the place of a weather-sealed Oly DSLR. Of course, I want the weather sealed 4/3 mount adapter with it...

"The AP2 port can even be used with the VF-2 and VF-3 external viewfinders, if you want to make use of their ability to hinge upwards by 90 degrees. We can't imagine many people will do this but it's nice to see Olympus hasn't prevented its use."

Heh! You can use the VF-2!

why oh why are the fn buttons limited still? Not that what's there isn't what I need it seems... but the principle of it... why!?!?

REC can be reassigned.. woot! (tho, could other oly's do this? i wish my G3 could...)

Yeah, they're still stuck with very strange "limited" customizability. Oh well. (Yes, my E-P3 can re-assign the movie record button to other functions).

Saving up $$$ now. w00t!

Damn right. If there was a body that justified u43 (in stills), this would be it.

Same here, I've got enough stuff already. If I do more paid gigs I could probably justify buying this, but right now I'm looking at this as as proof of concept model. Olympus is pretty good with its stuff, so I'll definitely look at buying one of their bodies in the next year or two.

Loving the looks as well. My FM3a totally reels in the chicks, so this would be a GREAT replacement for many things in my bag.

Love it! I guess if they allow you to use the VF-2 along with another 1.44 million dot EVF, then maybe there's a chance of the next E-7 DSLR having an AP2 port under the hotshoe to allow VF-2, VF-3, PenPal, MAL-1, and even EMA-1 (for two mics, like the two viewfinders?) compatibility along with the optical viewfinder. xD

Not that this concerns me now, because the OM-D is paving my way to not going back to DSLRs. I just think it would be fun to see, lol.
