Back to defishing this lens.

A while ago I made the following post:

I haven't been able to come up with a way of de-fishing the 8mm until now.

Amin Sabet started a thread on de-fishing the Rokinon 7.5mm in LR using the Sigma 8mm fisheye profile. I'd tried a couple of other profiles and they weren't all that successful but I tried the Sigma one and it works pretty well.

Before:

After:

So at least that's one quick way of de-fishing the 8mm for anyone who's interested.

Some time after that one of our members provided a link to a modified profile he had made for the Panasonic 8mm fisheye and I tried it. I think it works better than the Sigma profile Amin suggested. I've done a quick look for the exchange about that profile but haven't been able to locate it so I'll look again further to see if I can find it and I'll edit this post to include the links if I can find it.

In the meantime, I think we have a game changer. There's a new new guided upright transform in the update to Lightroom CC which came out today. If you defish the image first using a profile and then using the new Lightroom feature to draw 2 vertical lines, one on the large building under construction on the right and one on a vertical line to the left of the frame on the building there, you can correct the residual keystoning effect in the image and end up with this:

Now it's starting to look like a more rectilinear lens.

Summary, if you have Lightroom CC the combination of a profile to defish the image plus using the guided transform produces a really good result. The profile can work really well but the guided upright transform can put the icing on the cake in a very nice way in my view.

I found the post which provided the 8mm Panasonic fisheye profile here:

Panasonic 8mm f/3.5

I've been using Bruce McL's profiles since he posted them and I prefer them to the Sigma profile Amin suggested. The version of my image above with the LR guided upright transform applied was done using one of Bruce's profiles.

I remember having an exchange with Bruce at the time but it must have been via private message since it is not in the thread in which his post appears.

The first one is with Live Composite- I aborted it when I saw the headlights coming off the mountain, which is probably why the star trails fade off- I kind of like the effect. I posted a similar pic in the 7-14 Pro thread, and you can see how much more light the f1-8 picks up with just a little bit longer exposure (but lower ISO). The second shot was a 25-second exposure, and captured a couple of shooting stars (cropped for embiggening purposes).

I've yet to fully get used to this lens but I feel I am learning.
