    At some point I noticed I had three of the four different versions, of the 50mm f1.8 so I decided I needed all four. I just found the last one, a really nice silver nose, at the flea market. It was attached to an OM-1 MD (nice camera).

    The "Made In Japan" version is supposed to be the best. Honestly, I can't tell the difference. If you are looking for one , I would buy based on the condition.

    And before anyone asks.... No I don't know why I needed all four.

    (not a great photo, I was in a hurry, but I did use another Oly 50mm 1.8)

    Hmm - so you are the reason for the Great Olympus 50mm f1.8 Crisis of '13 ;)

    Any optical construction differences? Coating differences?

    Don't quote me because I haven't looked it since I bought my OM 50/1.8 long ago, but I believe the silver nose is the older version, the MC is multicoated, and the "Made in Japan" one is the newest and sharpest variant.

    Also, there were two optical formulas depending on the age of the lens. The older one had an extra element, and was heavier.

    All of them were generally considered sharper than the OM 50/1.4.

    I have both the OM 50 mm f/1.8 (SN 3,651,384) and the f/1.4 (SN 1,108,444) and much prefer the 1.4.

    50mm f/1.8 Zuiko (multi-coated, late "Made in Japan" variant), serial number 3694244
    Vignetting = C- @ f/1.8, A- @ f/2.8, A thereafter
    Distortion = slight barrel
    Aperture Center Corner
    f/1.8 B C
    f/2.8 A- B+
    f/4 A+ A
    f/5.6 A A-
    f/8 A A-
    f/11 A- B+
    f/16 B+ B
    Notes: High contrast at f/1.8 to f/2.8 and f/11 to f/16, very high
    contrast at f/4 to f/8.

    50mm f/1.4 Zuiko (multi-coated) lens with >1,100,000 serial number
    Vignetting = D @ f/1.4, B @ f/2, A- @ f/2.8, A @ f/4
    Distortion = none
    Aperture Center Corner
    f/1.4 B B
    f/2 A- B
    f/2.8 A A-
    f/4 A A
    f/5.6 A A-
    f/8 A- A-
    f/11 A- A-
    f/16 B+ B+
    Notes: High contrast, except moderate in center at f/1.4, moderately low in corners at f/1.4 and moderate in corners at f/16; remarkably even performance across all apertures.

    I'd bet that one's the same as the other silver nose, since Oly changed the name simply to avoid the wrath of Leica.
