Cross posts from the birds thread. Thought it would be good to put them here to though.

It does alright for football. I actually prefer it over the 40-150mm 2.8 which my wife uses.

Very happy with this lens now that I got a real adapter for it (MMF-2). Tried two cheap versions that would communicate for only a few minutes and then disconnect. Lens is fast, sharp, and has nice colors. On EM-1.1, C-AF with high burst doesn't seem to reach the same burst speed as with something like 12-40 Pro. I was happy to find this was confirmed by great testing done here: https://www.mu-43.com/threads/e-m1-vs-e-m1-mk-ii-burst-rates-with-four-thirds-lenses.89602/

Another example at decent crop.

Unrelated to this image, I also found out that at least on the E-M1.1, C-AF and face detect don't play nice at all. It resets/power cycles the lens. Anyone else have this issue?

I just purchased a used copy of this lens. I had previously owned owned the Panasonic 100-300 and found that I didn't get along well shooting telephoto so I sold it. I really don't shoot birds much but I do enjoy watching the birding thread. I had noticed some incredible photos there taken with this old 4/3 lens. I don't know why but I got the itch (GAS) and bought one from a forum member.

Here are a few images from my first outing with this wonderful glass.

Great shots. I really like the 2nd one in particular.

Still true now that this is one of the best bargain "pro" level lenses an owner of a PDAF Oly body can buy. I too am not much of a birder nor longer telephoto shooter. So I find the 50-200mm to be about perfect for the longest focal length I would normally need and it does a bang up job at it!

Back in the 4/3rds days forums like this were often peppered with the question comparing this one to the Oly 70-300 and which to buy. Of course the 70-300 was not in the same league as this one and was priced accordingly ($300 vs. about $1k for this one). But people who had owned and shot both would say that they got sharper images from the 50-200 at 200mm and cropping to get the 300mm field of view than they did on the 70-300 at 300mm so even if someone had the 50-200 and were thinking of picking up the other for the 300mm, the advice was to save their money and just crop.

Both are ~ 50% crops. I had just enough time to turn around and see and shoot.

This thread caused me to grab the EM-1 with the 50-200 non SWD 2.8/3.5 lens and head out to our nature center smack dab in the middle of the city. No herons or egrets present and no deer seen but this gave me the flavor of the center and shows the excellence of the lens.
