Obviously I see the FL is different, but both would suit the range of photography I have planned for my one wide FL lens.
also, one is MF and the other AF

but in terms of rendering, detail, contrast etc. does anyone have both and can comment ?

I am planning to use on an OM-D

    many thanks in advance

What would be your range of photography?

buildings and people in close up urban spaces

trade off between distorting people (bad) and getting more building in (good)

If you shoot a lot of buildings, then the 12mm. If more people, then the 17.5mm.

    You already know the tradeoff.

The 17.5mm is quite soft at f0.95. I usually use it at f1.4. It's a heavy lens.
Vignetting is quite strong and around f2 it becomes acceptable.
The softness and vignetting are the two main points of concern.

The 12mm is a great lens. As with wide angle lens, you would get a much deeper depth of field.

You should check Flickr for more photos.
