Playing around with my new-to-me copy of this lens. I am quite pleased. 😊

My wife is a gardener and likes to visit a local botanical garden operated by the local horticultural society. When I tag along, I bring the 12-50 to use the macro mode. Finally got some acceptable shots of insects on flowers yesterday, the secret seems to be to jack the shutter speed up, way up. OOC JPEGs.

Very nice!
This lens was my first m/43 macro lens.
Well... pseudo-macro.
The macro feature and weather seal makes this lens worth.

Well... pseudo-macro.

Once Vivitar started using the marketing term "macro zoom" in the mid 70s with the legendary 70-210/3.5 Series I, every manufacturer suddenly used the word macro for anything that focused closer than a foot.

A lot of fixed focal length, flat field macro lenses in the film days only made it to 1:2 ratio, not 1:1. My first actual 1:1 experience was in the early 80s when Vivitar came out with a 2x teleconverter with an helicoid extension tube. It turned a 50/1.4 that only focused to 18" into a 100/2.8 that went to 1:1.

Another outing with my wife, got one shot I'm happy with and one that's a near miss.

Here's the miss...not enough DOF! The frog was only about 1.5" long. Shooting wide open at f6.0 I got the eye in focus but all the rest is out of focus. I still had a polarizer on, if I removed the filter I could have been at f8 or less. Live and learn, but check out the eye detail in the crop.

Lovely piccies.

I've personally found the 12-50 to be a lot better lens than some give it credit for.

Imaging Resource testing supports my view as well.
