I've had my new 12-50 for a couple of months now, and the manual zoom action still feels very 'gritty' to me. By comparison, the slightly older but bought used O40-150 and the bridge superzoom I used to have are much smoother. Question for existing owners of this lens - does it eventually wear in and get smoother?

That's pretty much how it is. You need to remember you are manually moving the gears of the motor drive of the zoom which is something other lenses wouldn't have. I don't know if is actually rotating the zoom motor or not, but it feels like it does (even if it isn't) & hence it feels different to a standard zoom.

Yes the 12-50 definately has a rougher feel to it when manually zooming than non-power zooms. But it's smooth when using the power zoom feature.
