I know the focal length is a big difference, but I wonder how satisfactory the 12-40 2.8 will be for macro work. Would it make having a Oly 60 2.8 seem a little redundant for the casual shooter that takes an occasional macro shot?

Both the 12-60 and 14-54 work well as casual "macro" - really close up lenses. I would assume the 12-40 given its spec would work well too.

The 12-40 should work very well with it's 0.3x max magnification ratio. My 12-50 in its macro mode has a similar figure of 0.36x, which I find very adequate. The 60 would suit for true macro (tiny) or if you want a better working distance.

I would use the 12-40 or 14-54 for casual macro as well. The 12-50 does a decent job too. However, I would absolutely use the 60mm for frequent or serious macro.
