Used to be quite a blast to go see, hang out and mingle with astrogeeky types. The new spangly Chabot Space and Science Center is alright but not nearly the same vibe as the original place.

Evidently too expensive to fix and too expensive to tear down so it sits and rots away.

My daughter was digging it as it is set in the woods (not really) and there is a day school ... she wants to go to that school and play in the derelict observatory. I gave her my old E-P1+14-45 lens and will post her photos ...

In the meantime ... Original Chabot Observatory - Minus.

    Keep Out!

I really wanted to find a way inside ... the sign is not an idle threat - there were several sets of nervous eyes on me from the nearby residence (really cool spot for a house with an amazing view over the bay).

Maybe I can finagle my way in ...

Way cool! I want in my self. Any chance there is MFT adaptable glass in there too?

"...to the fullest extent of the law." is so ambiguous. Seems to me it's referencing the financial stretched judicial system's incapacity to expend resources to take a dangerous photog off the streets.

Don't encourage my backslide into delinquency! If there is any glass in there it will be big ...

I seem to recall 8" and 20" refractors at one time. Those have been moved to the new site.

I'm struck by the dichotomy of the original lovely hand-lettered "NOTICE" sign in that second shot and the bludgeoning "WARNING" sign that obviously came later. Beyond the aesthetic differences, there's the tone: the original explains the reasoning for the closure while the latter merely threatens punishment. Maybe there's a statement in there somewhere on the "progress" made by our society through the years.

Next time I'm in Oakland I'll look you up and we can go trespass together.

Nice set, although it is sad to see a beautiful building slowly rot away.
