They are known as gnamma holes here in Australia. Can be critical for surival. I have personally relied on a few when bikepacking.

It looks good in colour too, taken about a year ago.
I think it was along I-70 in Utah, @Harvey Melvin Richards will know the name of the place as it was his picture of the place that sparked the interest in this unused picture.
(Sometimes when I go through my pictures I get sensory overload and just don't recognize what is actually a good one.)

The I-70 in Utah is worth going both ways, because the views from the rest stops are different, It almost seems that the planners of the road choose the most beautiful places to put the rest stops.
(Or as I am a cynical bastard, this is all we see because we can only stop at the rest stops and there is even more beautiful vistas to be found if you can stop anywhere.)

Whenever I go back to Utah I will try to stop at every rest stop I see because it is usually worth it!

Mt. St. Helens WA, USA, I go here every here at least 2 times. Was comparing photos from 2017 and 2018 and this year the snow is noticeably low.
