One of my other hobbies is Bushcraft / Primitive Skills and camping, so I like to get out at least once a month (all 4 seasons) and hit the woods for an overnight or longer trip. I usually try to coordinate with a friend or two and we'll work on skills like firecraft, carving, etc. or just hang out and enjoy the woods time.

Went on an overnighter this weekend with my two friends from NY state Matthew Paul and Alexander Yerks. Matt is a knife maker and blacksmith by trade, creating hand forged knives and tools. Alex is a talented photographer as well as a full time wood carver specializing in hand-carved wooden kuksas (cups).

Here's some of my favorites from the trip, with lots more on the Flick album for anyone interested in checking those out.

All photos with the GX1, lenses were the 25mm f/1.4 for most shots, as well as the 12-35mm f/2.8 and 45mm f/1.8

First some shots from Matt's shop where we hung out for a bit and Alex tested and added a handle to a gouge Matt had just finished forging the day before.

Alex playing a little slide blues on his resonator guitar before we headed out for the night.

When we got to our destination, a rainstorm was passing through so we got some really dramatic and awe-inspiring lighting coming through the grey cloud cover.

We hiked in and set up camp, then lit the evening's campfire and spent the rest of the night talking, cooking, carving, and having a good time

Not bad for ISO 3200... I even got a few at ISO 6400 that were passable. The GX1 and a fast lens put in a respectable showing at high ISO even next to Alex's D4

Couldn't resist a quick photo shoot with a knife I had on loan for the trip, made by another good friend of mine, Iz Turley of Turley Knives.

Alex and Matt worked on carvings, Alex making a spoon and Matt a wood spirit / imp just for fun.

Matt's finished wood spirit, and Alex's spoon the next morning

Matt and Alex swing a heavy hammer or axe all day, so they have all kinds of calluses and wear patterns on their hands. A working man's tattoo, if you will.

Thanks - the natural light was killer with the storm clouds that day. That ended up being my favorite shot of the day and the one I picked for my Fall Foto Fest project entry

    Composition. Lighting. Subject matter. Details.

All very nice, and a point I would hope to get to someday.

    Thanks for posting.
