It is said the Stag is a noble beast – I remember that from somewhere. Maybe it comes from the old English kings practise of hunting them, they had to be noble for kings to hunt them …

But really, kings are just ordinary men dressed up. Everybody is of noble blood, and the antlered beetle is no exception.

Great shots. What are the evolutionary benefits of those "antlers "?

Incredible. Love the second one with the frontal view of the antlers!

Thanks Amin. A bit of luck that, once in a season.

Thanks Paul. I suspect they filter frequencies, like our nose and eyes and touch ... Sense. Apparently antennae can be tuned to smell or sound, etc.

Absolutely stunning work. I hopped over to your site - thanks for writing the very detailed treatment in your process and equipment. Speaking as someone who grew up in the country, I really appreciate your approach to leaving the critters unharmed and capturing them in their natural environment. bravo, sir!

Ditto everyone else. Truly splendid work Mark! The colors and details are exquisite! I also echo Isaac's sentiments about your website. As a fellow lover of nature and its infinite (fractal) beauty, I deeply related to your poetic narrative and your mindfulness in your imagery, both visual and literary. Every time I visit mu-43, I am reminded about what a wonderful hobbyist community this place is for us photographers. Thanks Mark and thanks Amin!

As always, just great again Mark! :2thumbs:

    :drinks:

BTW, we stopped to drop into an info display on native bee keeping & they had a slide show playing there (Glenbrook Native Plant Nursery), so I mentioned your name but lo & behold one of your photos appeared as I was talking to the lady. :) She did say she was to go to Queensland the following week.

Ross, I have let a few people use my pix but clearly I don't know all the uses they are put to.
