Lots of excellent entries guys, thank you (I think!)

72hrs has passed but if you have a fashionably late entry please feel free to submit, it's all about participation and fun, I won't be making my decision until tomorrow Aussie time as I have a family get together all day today.

Thanks again guys an enjoy your weekend.

Democracked.

Hi all,

Late to the tea party, lost track of the contest deadline. Happened to have this cropped in a 1:1 ratio, so enjoy!.

OM-D E-M5, PL25, ISO 200, f/1.4, 1/15s to get the over exposure (handheld!!). Cropped and post processed.

Panasonic GX1 - 14-42mm Kit Lens f5.6 @ 2000 to limit depth of field. Unprocessed apart from the crop, limited technology on our weekend farm!

An old fence post on the farm shot from the ground to give it an interseting perspective, not sure what the "tree" is, some sort of fungus I'm guessing.

Great challenge, even though this is a cropped shot I didn't even know my camera could do 1:1, so thanks! I have so much too learn.

Great challenge! It has demonstrated what a versatile and creative format 1:1 is. Maybe we should all use it more often!

G'day guys.

First off let me thank all participants who took part, great turn out for the theme and excellent entires, in fact, too many excellent entries which made my job an extremely difficult one, I could have easily made it a top 5 or 6, but rules are rules and so I will stick to just 3.

HONORABLE MENTION: goldenlight.
I like this shot a lot, it really does show off in the simplest way how effective 1:1 can be in framing precisely only what should be there, minimising the image down to bare bones. Without any distraction by shape or form, we are left with only the interaction between the 2 people. Nice work mate.

RUNNER UP: Spatulaboy
If I would have taken this shot it would have no doubt been a 3:2, maybe a 16:9....and sure, it still would have been a nice shot. BUT, all I would have achieved is to smother the most interesting elements in the image. I love the matching edge shadows at the top and bottom of the frame, the light along the path between the 2 birds and their nicely aligned stance and shadows. Vin your 1:1 really works here to accentuate these elements by removing the extra distraction from the sides that my 3:2/16:9 would have had.

WINNER: Joe777
When I first set this challenge I made mention how despite not EVER shooting or cropping 1:1, I often found 1:1 images really grab my attention and captivate me....this is one of those images. All the things that make square images great and interesting to me, this shot has. Looking at this image my eyes want to wonder over the entire frame because everything that is in it, much like the frame it is housed in, is of equal importance to the scene. It's is the sort of image that I favourite instantly on Flickr just so I don't lose it and so in years to come when I browse my favourites I know I'll get a chance to look at it again.

Superbly done Joe.

Great choices for the top three. This was a good challenge. I found myself checking in quite often to see new entries.

Thanks for the honourable mention, I'm pleased with that amongst so many great entries.

2nd is not only a great 1:1 composition but also has fantastic light and shadows.

1st is full of atmosphere that you could cut with a knife and is also a wonderful example of creative use of negative space.

I wonder if it is just coincidence that the top three are all B&W, or if maybe the classic 1:1 format is most effective when used with the classic medium? Food for thought.

Thanks Livnius for a great challenge.

Thanks to Livnius for the opportunity that allowed me to enter the competition. I feel very honored to have been chosen as the winner, amongst such great competition from all the entries. Congratulations to spatulaboy and goldenlight, both are great shots.

Livnius, thank you for the great compliments, there is much more to my image than just the shot. I go to the Abbey when I feel stressed because it's such a peaceful place. There were two reasons I went on that day, upcoming surgery a few days later and the perfect time for grabbing a few shots, on a very foggy and icy day, in a very special place. It was only because I took the wrong path into the Abbey grounds that enabled me to meet a young priest in training, who then escorted me to the chapel and said a prayer for my surgery, this made the shot and another happen. Otherwise I would never have been in the right place at the right time to have got this shot of the Monk.

I have visited the Abbey a few times every year for almost a decade and have never seen a Monk before. I am not a huge religious person, don't go to church but believe what is in my heart. This all happened for a reason, it was a profound experience and one I shall never forget.

Thanks to all for their images and your very nice remarks.

Joe - I didn't see your picture until it was announced by Livnius as the winner but as soon as I saw it I thought it was taken at the Abbey. What a picture!!! We visit it few times a year since we moved to Oregon.
