    The present.
I'm going to go 72 hours so the next person can determine the New year theme... this challenge will end on December 30th at ~ 5:40 PM...

The theme for this challenge is: Juxtaposition(s)

    jux·ta·po·si·tion [juhk-stuh-puh-zish-uhn]

    1. An act or instance of placing close together or side by side, especially for comparison or contrast.
    2. The state of being close together or side by side.

Here is an example of one interpretation of the theme:

    DMC-LX5       5mm    f/6.3    1/1000s    ISO 100

This is actually not the best interpretation. But... Jewish Museum on the right, Christian church left, secular building in the center. I think the key to juxtaposition is contrast... old and new, tall and short, moving and still...

    Have fun with this!

PS: feel free to write title and/or caption to accompany your submission(s)... please also feel free to explain any juxtaposition, especially if it is subtle.

    72 Hour Challenge Rules

As the title suggests, each challenge lasts for 72 hours. Everyone gets to submit 2 photos in line with the chosen theme. The winner of the previous challenge gets to choose the new theme (topics can be anything under the sun) and serves as the judge for his/her 72-hour challenge.

For obvious purposes, the judge is disqualified from participating in his/her own 72-hour challenge. Instead, he/she should post up to 2 photos as examples to start out the challenge. Should the winner not be able to commit to being the next judge, the responsibility is passed on to the runner-up.

At the end of the 72-hours (we don't have to be strict about 72-hours, especially with time differences depending on where you are on the globe), the judge will name a blue ribbon winner, a runner-up, and 1 honorable mention. As we all know, beauty is in the eyes of the beholder. We may not all agree with the chosen winners; the judge is encouraged (but not required) to state what criteria he used to decide on a winner.

To make sure we don't break any Mu43 rules/regulations, by participating in this thread you are allowing the judge to repost your image for the sole purpose of announcing the winners for "New 72+ Hour Challenge (27-30 Dec '12): Juxtapositions."

It is getting hard to keep track of themes already submitted. The list of previous themes in reverse order (newest first) are as follow. We should keep this running.

Juxtaposition(s), Reflection, Planes, Trains and Automobiles, Cherish the Child, Shadows/Silhouettes...

I suggest referring to this on future posts for a comprehensive list of previous topics (and winners)...

Congrats btw on your win, woof! And what a very interesting challenge may I say.

Here are my 2 entries: I previously posted this on the real street image and 12/2 threads. Juxtaposition between still and motion...

and second is juxtaposition between old age and youth...

This might have been the toughest theme yet!

First entry is this shot of a flower growing in our neighborhood, because my sole reason for taking this photo was the juxtapositional effect of something so alive and vibrant growing straight from the barren stone and asphalt.

This one is a shot of my wife taken at a farm while pumpkin picking this year. I framed it to purposely put her in the frame with the totally incongruous sight of a huge inflatable cow, backlit for dramatic effect.

Here's my second entry, taken from the Railroad Trail along Lake Mead in Nevada. A pair of bighorn sheep atop a barren rocky ridge, with high tension wires in the foreground and a Southwest Airlines jet in the background. Ancient wildlife juxtaposed with modern human civilization.
