Over the past few years I have seen some of my grandparents pass away while others are slowly losing their ability to function normally. This has been a painful reminder of the passage of time and of how short life is. There is no time to waste on silly arguments over silly things. The only thing that makes sense is to be kind to one another.

This is why I chose the theme of this challenge, which could also be called "Passage of time" or maybe "Old people". I think there are many possibilities here. Your photo could be a celebration of life (for instance, with a young child as the main subject), or a reminder of the passage of time (maybe old people in contrast with young ones?), or both at the same time, or an act of genuine altruism... Whatever you think is connected to the theme...

    72 Hour Challenge Rules

As the title suggests, each challenge lasts for 72 hours. Everyone gets to submit 2 photos in line with the chosen theme. The winner of the previous challenge gets to choose the new theme (topics can be anything under the sun) and serves as the judge for his/her 72-hour challenge.

For obvious purposes, the judge is disqualified from participating in his/her own 72-hour challenge. Instead, he/she should post up to 2 photos as examples to start out the challenge. Should the winner not be able to commit to being the next judge, the responsibility is passed on to the runner-up.

At the end of the 72-hours (we don't have to be strict about 72-hours, especially with time differences depending on where you are on the globe), the judge will name a blue ribbon winner, a runner-up, and 1 honorable mention. As we all know, beauty is in the eyes of the beholder. We may not all agree with the chosen winners; the judge is encouraged (but not required) to state what criteria he used to decide on a winner.

To make sure we don't break any Mu43 rules/regulations, by participating in this thread you are allowing the judge to repost your image for the sole purpose of announcing the winners for the 72-hr Blue Ribbon Challenge.

Been having a lot of fun with these challenges, both posting and seeing others' takes on the themes (I seem to be stuck on the hip to be square).

I like this. It makes me think of memory.

Now, I hope your mother hasn't passed -- but sometimes after people have been gone for a long time the clarity of the image they presented fades except for certain things... maybe a scent, color, a particular time. The blur on this (to me anyway) makes me feel that a little.

Interesting viewpoint, I did not think about it this way. She is alive and fine, I was just experimenting with the vaseline filter out- and indoors last summer. I very rarely photograph people anyway, just not comfortable with invading someone's privacy. I think her privacy is sufficiently respected in this particular photo

My 2 different takes on this theme...

First is the obvious, 2 geezers who obviously have known each other for a very long time (heck, I was wondering whether they were relatives or even brothers)

Second, is marriage. Yes, there will be quarrels and disagreements, but at the end of the day, I just remember that life is too short so why worry about trivial stuff?!

My two entries. The first one speaks to me on a few different levels on the "Life is too short". It is from a Carnival celebration here. The kids in the background, the out-of-date clothes, and of course, escorting two women at the same time!

The second one more falls under the "Passage of Time" aspect, since it has the ruins with the very modern buildings in the background.

I think that is a fantastic picture. It inspires me to want to try portraits myself, in hopes of capturing that type of...feeling...emotion...image.

This theme reminds me of a friends Uncle that I see every year at their family picnic. He sits there quietly alone, because he has problems speaking and getting around. I always wonder what he thinks about when I read this I always think of him.

    Cranky Old Man

What do you see nurses? . . .. . .What do you see?
What are you thinking .. . when you're looking at me?
    A cranky old man, . . . . . .not very wise,
    Uncertain of habit .. . . . . . . .. with faraway eyes?
Who dribbles his food .. . ... . . and makes no reply.
When you say in a loud voice . .'I do wish you'd try!'
Who seems not to notice . . .the things that you do.
    And forever is losing . . . . . .. . . A sock or shoe?
Who, resisting or not . . . ... lets you do as you will,
With bathing and feeding . . . .The long day to fill?
Is that what you're thinking?. .Is that what you see?
Then open your eyes, nurse .you're not looking at me.
    I'll tell you who I am . . . . .. As I sit here so still,
As I do at your bidding, .. . . . as I eat at your will.
I'm a small child of Ten . .with a father and mother,
    Brothers and sisters .. . . .. . who love one another
A young boy of Sixteen . . . .. with wings on his feet
    Dreaming that soon now . . .. . . a lover he'll meet.
    A groom soon at Twenty . . . heart gives a leap.
Remembering, the vows .. .. .that I promised to keep.
    At Twenty-Five, now . . . . .I have young of my own.
Who need me to guide . . . And a secure happy home.
    A man of Thirty . .. . . . . My young now grown fast,
Bound to each other . . .. With ties that should last.
At Forty, my young sons .. .have grown and are gone,
But my woman is beside me . . to see I don't mourn.
At Fifty, once more, .. ...Babies play 'round my knee,
Again, we know children . . . . My loved one and me.
Dark days are upon me . . . . My wife is now dead.
    I look at the future ... . . . . I shudder with dread.
For my young are all rearing .. . . young of their own.
And I think of the years . . . And the love that I've known.
    I'm now an old man . . . . . . .. and nature is cruel.
    It's jest to make old age . . . . . . . look like a fool.
The body, it crumbles .. .. . grace and vigour, depart.
    There is now a stone . . . where I once had a heart.
But inside this old carcass . A young man still dwells,
And now and again . . . . . my battered heart swells
    I remember the joys . . . . .. . I remember the pain.
    And I'm loving and living . . . . . . . life over again.
I think of the years, all too few . . .. gone too fast.
And accept the stark fact . . . that nothing can last.
    So open your eyes, people .. . . . .. . . open and see.
Not a cranky old man .
    Look closer . . . . see .. .. . .. .... . ME!!

Some wonderful pictures and portraits in this thread.

I am going to take a different perspective with my entries.

The first is about life as we live it, within moments in time. I was in a park goofing around with a Canon FD macro lens when I heard the squeal "Doggie!!" from the little girl. I turned and took an instinctive shot and I am surprised it was even in focus.

Life is short, but it is also fragile and random. Before you go "ouch", I should clarify that no snails were harmed in taking this shot.
