My Visual Diary 2021: Slow Touring with a Massey-Ferguson Tractor

This is Bruce from Shepparton in northern Victoria, Australia, who is on the road for a few months with his dogs for company in his gypsy wagon, towed by a Massey-Ferguson 135 tractor. Sometimes he hooks up his draught horse, Captain, to go clip-clopping with the wagon, which his truck-driver son built for him.

He told me that he's met a lot of wonderful folks on the road, and his rig always gets a lot of attention - when I saw it parked at the local campground, I had to stop for a chat and some photos. It's funny that these photos were taken in the same spot as the blacksmith demonstration photos I posted recently - when I told Bruce about that, he told me that he has his own forge at home, where he makes Captain's shoes.

The tractor cruises at about 35 kilometres per hour - which could sound idyllic, but not on days like today where there were long stretches of muddy roadworks, and icy rain. I suggested he get a motorcycle helmet, as he only has a roof - no cabin - to shelter him on the road!
