Was in Vegas this past weekend with my wife and the in-laws. I really like my in-laws but I missed out on a lot of photo opportunities being the designated driver. But I think I still managed to squeeze out a decent (albeit low in number) set of keepers. As always C&Cs are welcome.

    Night 1

Ate dinner at the sumptuous buffet at Aria. Only had a few mins right after dinner before the in-laws were ready to call it a night.

    <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/yekimrd/8361099176/" title="Aria by yekimrd, on Flickr"> View attachment 250284 "800" height="600" alt="Aria"></a>

    Day 2

Took the tram that goes between Excalibur and Mandalay Bay to exchange my half price Criss Angel tickets at the Luxor Hotel. This is the sight that greets you the moment you step off the tram.

    <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/yekimrd/8360034909/" title="Luxor by yekimrd, on Flickr"> View attachment 250286 "800" height="600" alt="Luxor"></a>

    Night 2

Our show got cancelled and of all possible reasons, it was because they couldn't lift the curtain. The irony. Of all people, shouldn't Criss Angel be able to use his magic to do that?!

So instead we went to see the Fremont Street Experience. The in-laws only lasted for about an hour-and-a-half (and that included our hour-long dinner).

    <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/yekimrd/8360035057/" title="Fremont by yekimrd, on Flickr"> View attachment 250287 "800" height="600" alt="Fremont"></a>

The in-laws retired at just before midnight. I pleaded with my wife for us to go out for even just a couple of hours to snap some keepers. Good thing we have the exact same hobby. Unfortunately, the Bellagio fountain show (which was at the top of my list of must-photograph scenes) only go until midnight. :frown:

Parked at the Paris Hotel and on our way out, spotted this exotic looking Paris employee.

    <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/yekimrd/8361098310/" title="Eriko by yekimrd, on Flickr"> View attachment 250289 "800" height="600" alt="Eriko"></a>

We then started walking up and down the street. We lasted just over an hour because the temperatures had dipped to 28F. Also, my initial attempts at photographing from the overpasses was met with failure. Wish I had a CP filter with me.

    Day 3

    Nada. Too busy driving.

    Night 3

The in-laws were set to watch Celine Dion at the Caesar's Palace while we were going to try again to watch Criss Angel. Only had enough time before the show to watch the Sirens show at Treasure Island (Thank God for my 75/1.8)

    <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/yekimrd/8361098608/" title="Lovers by yekimrd, on Flickr"> View attachment 250295 "800" height="600" alt="Lovers"></a>

I normally don't crop (heavily cropped from 75/1.8) but wanted to show you how haggard Criss Angel looks nowadays.

    Day 4

Trip to the south rim of the Grand Canyon. Our bus took us to Mather's Point and Bright Angel Point.

    Night 4

Got in late from our day trip to the Grand Canyon. Managed to sneak in a semi-decent shot of the Vegas strip through glass at an overpass. I'll definitely have to come back someday to take shots from atop the Eiffel Tower Restaurant and Stratosphere observation decks.

Wow, I think you got some good shots.

28-degrees is cold for Las Vegas!

Thanks! Vegas does lend itself to magnificent archi shots especially at night. :)

Thanks! It was really just that one night that it dipped down to 28deg. Other nights it was in the mid-30s; still cold but just typical for someone from the East Coast.

Thanks for sharing! I really like the second last one. I like the bold colors a lot in your photos. Do you shoot RAW and if so how do you process them?

Thank you so very much for your kind words!

Some smart friend photographer of mine told me once that the best photographs you'll ever see are those you yourself didn't take. And I agree, I think we are own worst critics. And isn't the grass always greener on the other side? Oftentimes, an almost throwaway photo of mine turns out to be the best of the bunch and conversely, I sometimes hang on to a photo for sentimental reasons even if it has little to no true artistic appeal.

I do shoot RAW. I use LR4 and don't like exporting my work via plugins. Nik and OnOne softwares are great but a bit of a hassle for me. I've since come across SLR Lightroom presets. I use it as a jumpoff point and added my own personal tweaks to their presets and adjustment brushes. It also vastly speeds up my workflow (it was designed by and for wedding photographers). You should look into it.

For landscape shots, I find that a lot of times that haze gets in the way of maintaining color saturation and contrast so I boost those to a moderate degree in my photos. I try to boost color and contrast just a notch above what I remember seeing.

Having frequented the place, where would you recommend is the best place to get a bird's eye view shot of the strip? Eiffel Tower, Stratosphere, or both? Any other recommendations? Any opportunity for a sunset type shot?

I've been meaning to go back to the Stratosphere with my camera b/c the view is outstanding. Some of the best views of the strip though are from hotel rooms on the upper floors that face down the strip. The Jockey Club Hotel, which was right next to the Bellagio (sp) had an excellent view of the strip with the water show in the foreground. The Aria would be a good spot as that's at the City Center and at the base of the strip, I haven't been to the upper floors though.

To be honest, I don't go to the strip anymore when I'm in Vegas just b/c I've been there too many times. If your into landscapes, check out Red Rock or Mt Charleston. You can actually see the strip from Mt Charleston and i've been meaning to drive back out there to take pictures.

Your Las Vegas pictures are awesome even I've been frequented to Las Vegas as I'm only 10 hours drive to Las Vegas from Northern California (or 1 hour airline flight).

To see full Las Vegas Strip view from above is to take helicopter ride at Sundance Helicopters

Sample pictures for Las Vegas Strip, taken from helicopter last October 2012, are provided below.

Thanks for sharing your pics, Mikey. You got some great shots! I fell in love with Las Vegas a number of years ago, and make trips out there 3-4 times a year. In fact, despite the fact that I live 2500 miles away, I started a blog about Las Vegas in October. It's an obsession.

There are a lot of great places to get shots of the strip from... Go to Mix (bar and restaurant) at the top of the Mandalay Bay for an expensive ( $18 ) drink and you get an amazing view of the strip from the southern end. Go out on the balcony, and nurse your drink out there. There is a wall of glass, but you can shoot over the glass. There is also a view to the South from the Men's room (shoot through the glass here). For a profile view of the strip, head up to Voodoo (restaurant and bar) for another expensive drink, and go out on the rooftop patio. Stratosphere also has a bar called Level 107 from which you can get a 360 degree view, though there is metal structure between the panes. the best view I have had of the Bellagio fountains was from a "Terrace Wraparound Suite" at the Cosmopolitan. At sunset, you might want to head out to Red Rock Canyon for some fantastic shadows playing across the mountain/desert landscape. You can see a little bit of the strip from here too, (NYNY, Monte Carlo and a bit of City Center), though you'll need to view your photos at a decent resolution to make them out.

While my photos are not nearly as nice as yours, I will try to add some of my shots from the vantage points I mention above to give you an idea what you can see from where.

Thanks for your kind words and the tips. If I may ask, how much does it cost for the helicopter ride?

Wow! That's a wealth of useful information for my certain future trip. Thank you so very much!!! Please do add your pics here either here or as a separate thread. Can't wait. Also, if you can provide me a link to your blog, I'll be happy to pay it a visit.
