One of my favs: Craig Gerdes. Various venues, usually small town bars with poor lighting. EM1X with Oly 75mm 1.8 at 1.8 to 2.0. ISO ranged from 6400 to 10000.

Hard to believe that this was shot at ISO 12,800. When I walked into the bar, Craig Gerdes was at the far end of the room. There were hardly any lights on, the only light was from the store front windows which were maybe 75 feet from the performer. So crank the ISO up. I was able to get 160th at 1.8 with the 75mm Oly lens.

Noise abatement by Denoise AI using the Clear option set to to High and High.

Addendum: This was a full well exposed images. Under exposure does not work well with the Clear option. Then you must use Denoise AI with a complicated workflow: on copy layer run Denoise so that it is OVER denoised and there are no areas with artifacts or undenoised. This will not look good without modification. This procedure is preferable to trying to get the Denoise settings good as it take some trial and error and much time. On the denoised copy layer at 100%, reduce the opacity until the image noise looks good. Check the skin for waxy appearance. If the image looks good all over, you are done. Sometimes you cannot get two areas in balance: if the skin looks good, the background is too noisy. Additional processing to fix that. Find the opacity at which the background grain looks good, it could be 100% but usually less. The skin will be too waxy or lack definition or grit. Note this percentage. Add a layer mask to the copy layer. With the color dialog box set a gray tone to the percentage you found. Fill the layer mask with this light gray. Set the copy layer percentage back to 100%. The image should look the same as the unmasked image set to your percentage. But now you have control of the grain. If you paint on the layer mask with a darker gray, more grain will come through. A lighter gray will lessen the grain. We want more grain on the skin so select a darker gray than the gray you filled the mask with, How much darker-experiment til you find a good value. You need only do this a few times as your experience will guide you to good value at the get go. With a soft brush paint in the areas on the mask which need more grain. This does not have to be exact. Broad general strokes work well.

Tip1: When you find a good percentage for the fill, fill with a slightly darker gray. Then examining the image at 100%, move the Density slider on the layer Properties dialog. Be sure you are in the Masks mode in the Properties dialog. It is a button at the top left of the dialog. As you decrease the density the grain will decrease. You started with a too dark of gray mask, that means more of the underlying grain shows through. If the mask is black, you would see the original grain of the underlying layer. As you reduce the density the black become lighter and more of the effect of the denoised layer is introduced, reducing the grain. This way you can make fine adjustments in real time on the image and you can latter change you mind and come back an change the density. Advanced and used mainly on important, difficult images.

Tip 2: Even with all your hard work you may see white speckly dots in the blacks at 100%. Always examine your finished image for these dots. If you find them, if in LR, go to PS with a copy with LR adjustments. Make a copy Layer. Go to Filer->Noise->Dust and Scratches. With Threshold at 0 try a setting of 1. Usually all of the dots will go away without impacting the rest of the image. If this is not strong enough, try higher values until the bad areas are good. These values often impact the rest of the image. To fix this add a black layer mask and with a soft white brush paint in the bad areas on the mask showing the Dust and Scratches good layer below.

With a little practice this workflow goes pretty quick. But it is still a lot of work so is reserved for the situations where I have to use an insane high ISO to get the pictures and the pictures are important. Too bad I can't show 100% example images as the results are striking. The example above is from a good full exposure: then the Clear option works without much else required in processing. But in the heat of the battle these good exposures are often less than we would like and extreme measures are required.

These are really great - you've got to love the 75
Got photograph the full band in a top notch venue with full stage lighting and sound. Still used 6400d and used the 40-140 2.8 OLY because I had the shutter speed (up to 1/2000). Wild drummer with long blond hair. Very interesting close shots with the hair. Will post latter.
