This month topic is: Architectural Detail.
As in some portion of a building that got your attention, and you found a way to make a good interesting photo.
I suppose if your shot included the entire side of a building, that would be up to the voting viewer to decide.
And I suppose if your shot was so close in to an item, say, left nostril of a gargoyle (har har), such that can not really tell if that is a part of a building or not, well, again, that would be left up to the decision of the viewer.
..
Just have fun with it. Go for a walk looking at buildings, and see what portion/item catches your interest.

Rules:

1. The image must be taken within the contest month; the date the photo was taken must be stated in the post (not relying on the exif).
2. The image must resemble the theme, although a liberal and creative interpretation is encouraged.
3. A maximum of two (2) entries per participant, in separate posts

Rules for Participants:

  • This is a fun contest with nothing to be won but bragging rights.
Having said that, please read and follow the rules below to make it easier for everyone. (Winner does then have some responsibilities/duties. See below.)
  • The contest period is the current calendar month. Entries can be made until approximately midnight on the last day of the month local time. You can Vote for any picture or multiple pictures you like during the month and voting will extend until the third day of the following month. The winner will then be announced, and the new winner will then be responsible for posting the new contest. If the new contest is not announced by the 7th of the month, responsibility for posting falls to the second place finisher. Keep it simple and post/vote early so we don't have to obsess over deadlines and time zones.
  • Post a maximum of two entries, each in a separate post. (The host may also enter.)
  • As the purpose of this contest is to get people out and shooting, photos must be taken in the contest period. Please note the date the photo was taken in your post by stating the date (not rely on the exif).
  • As a m43 community, we advocate the use of m43 cameras. However, since many of us shoot with multiple systems, we allow photos taken with any camera.
  • Photos receive one point for each "like" (thumbs up), "funny" (happy face), "appreciate" (heart icon), or "agree" (green check mark) and two points for each "winner" (medal) or "Wow" (surprised face) clicked on the post. The photo with the most points wins the contest. A tie is resolved by the post with the larger number of "winner" and "wow" votes. Submitting a photo to the contest is not required to be able to vote.

    Procedures for Winners/Contest Hosts:

  • As a contest winner, you are responsible for posting/hosting the contest for the next month. This is easy and just requires several steps as outlined below.
  • Select the theme/topic for the next month. The theme/topic should be accessible and relevant for everyone. Obscure and difficult themes/topics limit participation and are thus discouraged. Avoid themes/topics related to specific holidays, seasons, geography, etc. Suggested themes/topics include: B&W, Portrait, OOC jpeg, Close Up, Self Portrait, Transportation, Minimalist, Architecture, Long Exposure, Art Filter, Motion, Specific Focal Length, Shutter Speed, Liquid, Reflections, Particular Colour, Calm, Repetition, Progression, Silhouette. Pick one of these or you may pick a theme of your own choosing. Themes may be used multiple times.
  • After you select a theme, post a new thread in "Contests and Challenges" section of the forum. The thread title should read "MU-43 Monthly Photo Contest for [current month, year] - [selected theme]". Copy and paste these rules into the new thread posting. Also please add the contest theme that you just won to the list. You may wish to include a sample photo to demonstrate the theme (and this will not count as an entry).
  • On the last day of the month, post that entries are closed and voting will continue and be accepted until the 3rd.
  • At the conclusion of voting on the 3rd or shortly after, tally the points
  • Photos receive one point for each "like" (thumbs up), "funny" (happy face), "appreciate" (heart icon), or "agree" (green check mark) and two points for each "winner" (medal) or "Wow" (surprised face) clicked on the post. The photo with the most points wins the contest. A tie is resolved by the post with the larger number of "winner" and "wow" vote
  • announce the winner and runner-up, being sure to tag them in the post by using an @ in front of their user login name
  • also send a PM ("discussion") to the winner.
  • Most important thing is HAVE FUN! Get out with your camera, maybe look at and shoot somethings that you don't usally look at. And remember that the host for this month is just the person that happened to win last month.
  • MU-43 Monthly Photo Contests (Can look at this to see many of the past threads and thier topics.) (The link is of a query for threads having "MU-43 Monthly Photo Contest" in title. Hence, why is important to have the new months thread title contain exactly that.)
Example Photo (not an entry) (your submission need not be similar to this, your submission only needs to follow the stated theme/topic):

Hoping this counts! From what I can tell, this is a window used to display menus, with the bulb lighting it from behind. The restaurant looked like it had gone out of business. I first photographed it on Christmas Eve: http://instagr.am/p/CJqjtDADrco/ but wasn’t entirely happy with the sharpness, so I went back on January 2nd. Lo and behold, the building is being renovated now, and this is what the same window looks like now:

Love how this is a case in point of photography capturing a moment in time.

First, Justin, let me welcome you to MU43 and welcome you to the Monthly Contest Game.

Hoping this counts! ........
...........................I first photographed it on Christmas Eve: .....
...............................so I went back on January 2nd. .............

If "counts" relative to the Jan 2nd date, well, that is before the December contest was announced, that is before the January topic/theme was stated, but is after the December contest submissions closed. But, the rules state " 1. The image must be taken within the contest month ...." and January 2 is during the month of January. So, I would say it "counts" by a literal interpretation of the written rules.
But, I am the "host" of the month. Some forum moderator might say otherwise, based on past accepted practice.

If "Counts" relative to the stated topic/theme of the month, that is up to the discretion of the voting viewer, and if they vote for it or not.

My first entry taken Jan 9th, 2021 with my Panasonic GX85 and the Olympus 40-150mm f/4-5.6. Shot at ISO 2500, f/5.6, 1/320s and 150mm.

These are architectural details found on Old City Hall in Toronto. The architect was E.J. Lennox and the building was completed in 1899. City councilors were angered by construction delays and cost overruns so they would not allow Lennox to have a plaque on the building crediting his work. He got his revenge by signing his name on corbels with the lettering spread out so they wouldn't notice. The characters such as the ones in my photo adorning the exterior are rumored to be unflattering caricatures of some of the councilors. An amazing building that survived the wrecking ball in the 1960's thanks to public outcry.

Who would imagine a chain grocery store being a major attraction for visitors to Cleveland? ...when it occupies an architecturally magnificent former old banking space. The space was designed by George Browne Post (architect of the New York Stock Exchange), completed in 1908 as the Cleveland Trust Building.

The three story rotunda is very interesting space, the second floor is devoted to wine and beer sales, which also features self serving wine tasting machines (you need to purchase a card first).

This shot, taken January 9, 2021, captures just 2nd floor and above. The murals depict part of the history of Cleveland.

Taken on Jan 10th 2021. The building is The Old Library in Leamington Spa, Uk. It’s now an up market apartment complex but started life as a public library.

There is a small nature center south of my home that encompasses an old mill, raised walking paths near a creek, and plenty of woodland paths that snake through the small 85-acre property. Named Abbott’s Mill, it includes a grist mill originally built in 1795 that is typically opened one Sunday each month for tours. When visiting, small groups of people can see the waterworks opened up and the mill in operation. Unfortunately it has been closed this year for both the current situation as well as some structural repairs, but the surrounding paths and waterways are still available for a leisurely stroll. Today’s walk was nice - we only passed a father/daughter couple walking the opposite direction during our entire two hour stroll.

This is a shot of the roof that covers the lower portion of the mill that houses the grist stone. The round stone wheel is slowly turned by the passing water of the creek and was used to grind grains from local farms. Picture taken shortly before noon today, the 10th of January.

Strictly speaking, these surf boats (the Shoalhaven the Maroubra, and the third one just behind the XXXX sign, I can't recall the name) have been welded onto the roof of the Great Southern Hotel in Berry, NSW, through 2 supporting bars on the other side of each boat. So I guess they qualify. In better days they were complete with oars and spiffy paint, but time has not been kind.
