I had the opportunity to rub elbows with the new owners of the drag strip at Autorama yesterday. I was assured that I will be returning as a trackside photographer. One of them told me they're busy getting the track updates done and repairs made going into their first season, so if they don't get a chance to send the media pass out just come on and use his name. Cool.

After a winter of using fish eye lenses and not photographing anything that moved faster than a cloud or a steam train this was my first motorsport event of 2022 at Oulton Park. Felt very rusty and forgot how fast bikes go . Took my "lighter" kit to dial myself in slowly but it was too nice a day (sheltering from the sun in March!) so was more tired by the end of my seven hours than I should have been .

For the first time I took both Raw and JPEG so I could have more of a fiddle when I got home. Being honest on the handful of comparisons that I've processed, for my purposes, I think I can stick to JPEGs unless the conditions are a bit iffy i.e. miserable or extremes of light.

All being well - Its due to be a bit colder than last week so I'll be the one with the flat cap, gloves and thermos!

Minor but very welcomed (and extremely rare for the Isle of Wight) local sprint event ‘Isle of Wight Speed Trials‘ taking place over the weekend
Not great for photographers with only general public access like myself due to all spectators being placed over a single restricted strip area and hay bales blocking viewpoints - but a good excuse to get out with my recently acquired (latest) EM1X and PL50-200 f2.8 - f4.0 which I was eager to try out
These are at full extension and was generally very pleased with sharpness and contrast at 200mm (was a bit ’rusty’)
May return for second day today but dependant upon Sunday family plans - will be returning with the PL200 f2.8 if so
Some are copped and slightly enhanced some are SOOC JPEGs the larger in frame shots are the modified ones - the more distant are showing the shooting distance as was
‘PAV 950R’ is quite a heavily cropped image from the Sony A7 R3 with 24-105 f4.0

Currently feeling that the potential improvement with the OM-1 currently awaited on pre order does not justify the £1100 ! additional cost in upgrading from this EM1X which provides more than adequate Motorsports AI tracking and image quality
EM1X used prices have fallen dramatically due to part exchange and sales from users upgrading to the OM-1 - my current EM1X was purchased in mint condition with less than 3000 actuations for under £900 which presents superb (exceptional) value for money for a camera released at (an over priced ?) £2700 in the U.K. !

No the third image in the sequence above was with Sony A7R3 + 24-105 (quite heavily cropped) which wasn’t suitable on the day for the action shots but I used it for photographing the cars in the paddock - I’ll post some examples below
Am enjoying using the M43 kit again now that I have another EM1X but like the Sony kit too
Not buying the OM-1 (which is likely to be my decision now) will allow me to keep both systems going at the moment with the proviso that some items will have to go in the longer run
Spoilt for choice with regard to overlapping lenses for similar focal lengths so will probably try everything out more through the season and work through what’s best to keep and best to sell off
Supertelephoto requirements will probably keep me with M43 as the PL200 f2.8 produces very good results - see below for brief shooting results from today

Bit of an eclectic mixture of cars which made it quite interesting - popped down very briefly with the family this afternoon and got a few more with the PL200 f2.8 this time - even more spectators today so even less opportunity to get access to trackside to get some shots in but just wanted to try out the EM1X and PL200 f2.8 and compare the 50-200 at 200mm
Got a Grasstrack event next Sunday which I’ve not done before - best described as speedway on grass with slightly different bikes which have different frames, gears and brakes
They can provide dynamic images with the grass flying up from the back wheels
Luckily one of my friends involved with speedway has arranged for me and Ian to have infield access so really looking forward to this one - and it’s near Winchester too so not much travelling
Will post some images the following week

Q - does anyone know whether it is usual for large files to be rejected
Have tried to upload 42mp images from my A7R3 which results in a message saying server unable to upload ?

Too far away needed 200mm in M43 for the ‘action’ shots
Used the 24-105 for static paddock shots of vehicles taking part but as above the M43 forum won’t accept them ?
