Motion Sensor

Has anyone figured out a way to get a motion sensor and use it with a Lumix body?

either short movies or stills - I'm looking for a higher quality trail cam type setup

Yes... it is doable. If your camera has a remote input, Miops, Vello, and others make a motion sensing trigger for connection to the remote input. Miops uses a laser, Vello uses an IR sensor. For movies vs stills, you can set the camera up for Snap Movies.

But this is still doable with cameras without a remote input as most Lumix cameras with WiFi have an HTTP interface for control, but it gets more complicated. You'd need a motion sensor capable of sending a signal over the local network to a computer or smart phone, and an app that can send an HTTP request to the camera when that signal comes in.

On Android, Tasker can do this based on a notification... iOS not so much. However, if you want to minimize any lag in response, the dedicated Miops, Vello, etc. devices will be best.

If you camera has a TRRS remote input, and you know some basic electronics: The interface is pretty simple, just a few resistors and contacts in the right spot. The trick is that if you allow the camera to sleep then you will need two presses on the button, one press to wake it, one press to trigger the camera. A simple microcontroller such as Arduino could do this.

You also need a battery replacement if you need power for longer periods.

I have no first-hand experience, but supposedly this trigger can do motion along with many other input scenarios.
