More windmills, at Zaanse Schans

Inspired by the success of my recent trip to Kinderdijk, I decided to visit another "tourist trap". The village Zaanse Schans got 2.2 million visitors in 2019, making it the most visited destination of the Netherlands. And yet, I had never been there. Time to change that.

Well, I must say it's very touristy. It's a tiny village with narrow paths, and at almost every house and windmill you encounter they sell touristy stuff. The place was relatively quiet (because of the pandemic), and still it felt crowded to me. Keeping 1.5 metres distance was challenging. I can only imagine what it must look like when there is a constant stream of touring cars dropping off tourists who like to get the "typical Dutch experience".

Anyway, here are some pictures for you windmill fans out there (@Avondale87 :)). The sunlight was a bit too harsh, but I just felt like going in the afternoon... It was also the first time that I used a circular polariser.

Albert Heijn is the largest supermarket chain of the Netherlands now. It was founded somewhere around here. The shop in the picture "is a mixture of two houses and has been reconstructed as the first Albert Heijn grocery store" (as the travel guide app said)...

This man is a local and was happy to share some info about the windmills. I also asked him whether it was quiet or busy today. "Very quiet", according to him. I guess I shouldn't complain. :)

Certainly colourful place.
Very interesting collection of photos. You've given a snapshot tour of life I'll not see. Much appreciated

Thanks Frank. I was hoping to make a similar photographic trip through Holland very soon, whilst all or most of my school friends living there are still about. These pics just give me heimwee...
