I sympathize and identify with nitpicking?.
I chose "shadows" since they were out of focus and suggested a shadow effect vs .a silhouette, which I usually associate with greater definition. Literary license, if you will.

Casting shadows would be especially fitting if you consider that the light of the moon was casting shadows of the branches on you and your camera.

Moon over London. Decided to try the new DxO noise reduction on it, and I am actually impressed with its performance. It managed to recover a star or two from the initial noisy image.

This is the first test shot with Tokina SZX 400mm Reflex lens. It's also the first new reflex lens design since who knows when. It's actually a T-mount FF lens so the m4/3 version was just bundled with T-mount to m4/3 adapter but it will fit practically any FF-APC C-m4/3 camera in existence.

It's also insanely difficult to focus and apparently the mount should be set on concrete or something. I believe that even this shot was not yet spot on or then the shutter shock made image slightly soft. Don't even try to use this without bluetooth app or timer.

Anyway, for anyone who needs 400mm only very occasionally this is relatively inexpensive way to get one. Actually I'm more interested about the doughnut bokeh but more about that in some other thread.

When dont have that long of a lens, need to include other stuff in the frame.
Birch tree and wooded dune provided that for this moonrise.
End of February this year.

That was previous full moon cycle (moon rise in evening, about 10 minutes after sunset).
Dont recall what I did that got the details of moon in good exposure. But I suspect the situation of it being twilight was a significant factor. Was hand held. 1/500th. ISO cranked up.

THis full moon attempt, this recent full moon, was early morning moonset, about half hour before sunrise.
I had the exposure target as small as it would get (still a bit bigger than the moon) and right on the moon. Only had time for a couple shots before clouds covered the moon.

Also tried lower ISO and smaller aperture so had longer exposure, which blended out the waves and reflections. All my shots there the moon is solid white glow.
THis was at the shorter end of the 40-150 zoom. Was going to save the longer/closer shots for when the moonset got closer / behind the pier, but that didnt happen because the clouds covered the moon shortly after this pic (can see some of the clouds there below the moon).

I would welcome any critique or advise.

In this shot HDR image might really help. Take for example 5 shots at -2, -1, 0 ,+1 and +2

HRD is useless for full-screen moon shots above because the whole damn thing is just a nearly evenly lit colourless blob and it doesn't have any dynamic range to work with but reflections on the water are wildly darker than the source itself or lights on the pier.

The other trick that works for me is to simply rotate the Exposure Compensation dial to -2 or so untill moon looks OK but in this case the rest of the scene will become pretty dark unless you use HDR

Since you use tripod and the moon or the pier are not about to run anywhere, I'd set the ISO to whatever is the native value for your camera (ISO 200) This would naturally smoothen the waves as well especially if you combine 3-5 exposures into HDR image but hey, "artistic" is just an other word for technically bad photography.

I suspect the recommendation for HDR could be accommodated by having a newer camera such as a GX85 (instead of my GX1).
Or, hey, exposure bracketing I can do with GX1, and then maybe some post processing function (I have Affinity).

Shooting full moon at this height only composite would help...the moon is too bright.
Best time is during blue hours and the moon near the horizon.

this was taken toward the end of "Civil Twilight" about 20 minutes before sunrise
