I picked one of these up today for $5 and set of 4 Hoya 55mm filters (+1, +2, +4, and an FL-Day) in a little case for an additional $5. I love thrift shops!

How sharp are these? I'm not too concerned about the sharpness because the colors seem awesome. Is the this specific lens I picked up a good model?

That's an excellent deal, especially on the lens which looks quite nice too. All MD Rokkor and plain MD (no Rokkor designation) 50/1.7 lenses have the same optical design and deliver excellent results, at least on my GH2. Wide-open they are usually soft, they get contrasty and sharp at f/2.8 and stopping down to f/5.6 makes the corners sharp enough too. The Hoya close-up lenses are most probably of a simple design (1 glass element); stop down to f/8 or so when using them, otherwise image quality may be disappointing. In theory you can stack the +1, +2 and +4 lenses to get a magnification of roughly 1:2.5 (10mm in subject becomes 4mm on sensor), but that will do nothing for image quality .

The colour rendition is the main reason I use Minolta lenses, I just love what they do in that department!

Bought a non-Rokkor version of this lens for $8 shipped off eBay a couple months ago. I'm really liking this lens. Especially for it's low light capabilities though the focal length with the 2x crop factor is a bit much for indoor parties and such. One of these days I need to invest in the Panasonic 20mm 1.7 for that. Anyway here are a few pictures I've taken so far. I sharpened and added a slight vignette to the squirrel shot, but the others have no PP on them.

Just the plain MD version (not Rokkor) with 49mm filter thread, with a Close-up Lens on top.

Difference between Minolta MD Rokkor and Minolta MD without Rokkor written

Hi,
How is the quality of images from Minolta MD 50mm f1.7 without Rokkor written on the lens.
Are these two lenses (Minolta MD 50mm f1.7 and Minolta MD Rokkor 50mm f1.7) same as far as IQ is concerned.
Actually I am getting this lens for around 30$. Is it worth buying it.
Thanks in advance.

I'm still figuring things out. :) Here are some shots I took this evening during our dinner, al fresco.

Lovely bokeh and color. I love Minolta Rokkor lenses, especially the MC versions with the knurled metal focus rings. I'm not a pixel peeper so I don't worry about the technical merits too much. If the image looks good to my old eyes, good enough.
