Medieval Festival E-M5/E-PM1

  1. For the second year in a row I found myself attending the local annual Medieval Festival. This is quite a cool event where the re-enactors really get into character and it's a great place to take a camera or two. Last year I was armed with my old E-P1 and some manual focus Canon FD lenses with my then new GH1 and 14-140mm. I got some nice shots but probably relied too much on the manual focus lenses which kept the shutter count and keeper rate well down.

This year I went considerably higher-tech with the E-M5 and 25/1.4 and occasionally the 14-140mm, plus an E-PM1 and 45/1.8 which are both new to me. The E-M5 and 25/1.4 is my standard street setup and the E-PM1 and 45/1.8 were for more portrait style and longer shots. I have had my eye on the 45/1.8 for a while but the E-PM1 wasn't an entirely planned purchase. I ended up being very impressed with both. I love the tiny size and minimal interface of the E-PM1 and even with no grip it balances very well with the 45mm. Most importantly, it is fast. Put the E-M5 sensor in this thing and it'll be amazing although having said that, using the E-PM1 with a great lens like the 45/1.8 and processing the raw files through Lightroom 4 proved to be a great combination.

The day was mostly overcast with some rain which makes the colours in some images a bit more subdued than they might otherwise have been at an event like this. Some images below with the camera and lens combinations noted. On the E-M5 I used the touchscreen focus and shutter about 80-90% of the time. The E-PM1 I used more conventionally with either one or both hands.

Wow the epm1 shots are rivaling the EM5 shots. 45mm lens shots looks really nice. Great colors in the costumes ... I love events like these.

Oh man....these guys really put in a lot of effort. So much detail and colour in their gear and I think your PP made the most of it without letting it get garish. Nicely captured images of the dancing women, especially #24....she is spectacular, in a wretched wench kind of way :) ....i could swear I bought some cakes off her in Nimbin a few years back !

Wonderful shots! My only comment though is that (and I know it can't be helped) the backgrounds are a bit too busy. From my limited knowledge, it seems like this is where a longer focal length might have melted the background stuff better? Or am I wrong? Thanks in advance for anyone's explanation.

  15. Thanks you all for looking!

I was really happy with how the E-PM1 shots turned out. I think that Lightroom 4.1 works well with the older sensor because I can move the highlight and shadow sliders further without the edge artifacts that would happen with my old version of Adobe Camera Raw. And yes, these events are great fun!

Thanks Joe. I'm not sure if I'd admit to having bought anything in Nimbin, though

No kidding! Do you have some Viking blood in the family, or does your Mum just do it for fun?

I know what you mean. Most of the time the focal length I used was governed by where I could stand, so there wasn't really a choice to go longer. Essentially this is where you start to run up against the limitations of the format in terms of generating shallow depth-of-field. If I'd had something like a 5D and a 50mm and 85/100mm lenses the backgrounds would have been smoother, but then the images would have been completely different anyway because I couldn't have held and operated a 5D like I did the E-M5 and E-PM1. An event like this has people and colours everywhere so busy backgrounds are hard to avoid, although in a way they do help to convey the vibrancy of the event.

  16. Just some more images that I've been working through below. I think that overall the 45/1.8 was the lens to have for an event like this, with the 25/1.4 being better in close quarters. The scary thing was that I could also see a possible use for the new 75/1.8 as well , or a faster telephoto zoom which we don't have just yet.

What great fun, LP! And some fantastic characters and expressions captured. IQ crispy, crispy, crispy! :2thumbs:

  18. Thanks Don. I love been able to take such small and discrete cameras to an event like this, combine with some similarly small and discrete lenses that are super sharp, and be able hit the mark with focus time after time without very much effort at all.
