I just came across a set of reviews from Camera Labs covering the Manfrotto 190 and 055 tripods. Gordon Laing, the reviewer, likes them all, but for different reasons.

I agree: this is indeed an excellent set of reviews. After reading it, I bought a 190cxpro3, and I'm very happy with it.

Again, thanks for the link Joe.
Yesterday I was looking at two variations of the same tripods.
Unfortunately the new small tilt head doesn't come with the big 055 legs ... so I'd be looking at spending even more to get both bits separately.
Still looking...
