Earlier this year I completed a three year project photographing Manchester's Northern Quarter and earlier this month I was awarded an Associateship of the Royal Photographic Society (ARPS) for a panel of 15 images taken from the project.

Some of the images have been posted here before, but I thought it would be good idea to bring the images together here.

For the record, all the images were shot using Olympus cameras (E-M5, E-M1 & Pen-F)

Congratulations on attaining your 'A'. You must be pleased, given the blood, sweat and tears you probably suffered! Nice portfolio

Thanks very much - Yes, it was hard work and there were times when I wondered why I was doing it. But, looking back I enjoyed the project and am obviously very happy with the outcome.

  4. Congrats Peter, there are some really interesting images in this collection. I really like the last one of the traffic warden and David Bowie, kind of made me smile LOL.
Well done on being accepted. :2thumbs:

    Congrats peter.
Last summer I visited Manchester, though not this part of town.

Well worth a visit - its just by the city centre!

  8. Back in my previous life in the UK, I used to visit Manchester quite often and would walk around the Northern Quarter to visit the record stores and spend some of my hard-earned cash. Ahhh.... happy days!! :)

Still plenty of record stores along with all sorts of odd/unusual shops. As you’ll probably recall, the area is constantly changing, part of its great attraction.

Well done on the RPS portfolio exam. Just out of interest what does membership gain you?

Oooh, that’s a hard one to answer! I joined in 2009 and I found it opened up a whole new world of photography outside club/hobby photography. My approach to image making has changed considerably as a consequence and I now concentrate on series/sets of images to tell a story rather than trying to shoot one-off masterpieces!

There’s a wide range of special interest groups (I’m a member of three) and a fair number of events run either by the groups or regionally - I have to acknowledge that there are geographical variations.

Over the ten years or so, I’ve made a lot of friends, met a lot of interesting photographers, both pro and amateur and gained lots of inspiration from my membership.

On a final note, my ARPS is an international measure of my personal photography - I don’t think I would have reached that standard without being a member of the RPS.

Hope that gives some sort of answer! At the end of the day, you get out of membership, what you put in.

Thanks I thought about it years ago then forgot, looking it up I can bypass the portfolio submission having a Masters in photography, I may just join to meet new people when we move to a different area if nothing else.

Wow... it is photography like this that inspires me to pick up the camera again. The tonality is outstanding. Thanks for posting.
