Hi, I am looking for a logical wide-to-standard prime choice to my Pan 12-35mm zoom lens. Currently it's my only lens for my Oly OM-D E-M5. I love the idea of the 20mm 1.7 pancake, especially for the size, although most suggest the 25mm 1.4. I've been watching/reading reviews of the 12mm f2 as well.

What do you guys suggest?

    Thanks
    J.

I just picked up the 25mm 1.4 to compliment my 12-35 and 35-100. Its a VERY nice lens!

not a prime but will add a new dimension to your photography... my vote goes to the 7-14. IMHO, its a great side kick to your 12-35mm. nice wide range and zooms upto 28mm (35mm equiv).

The Oly 12/2 is excellent, but not much faster and overlaps your 12-35's range.

Love the 20/1.7 (very pocketable, slightly wide angle) and the 25/1.4 (outstanding speed and IQ). Also own or have used the Voigtlander 17.5/0.95 and 25/0.95... full manual can be fun and they're both great glass, and 3 full stops faster than your zoom is nothing to sneeze at.

Have you considered a fast mild tele like the Oly 45/1.8? Alternately adapting any system's fast 50?

Get one of the pancakes and transform your camera to something pocketable.
    14mm, old 17mm, 20mm.

The 12-35 has excellent IQ and the only reason I see you needing a prime within that range is you want a faster lens or something more pocketable. For speed I'd say the 25 1.4 for pocketability the 20mm 1.7.
If you want to extend the range of the 12-35 then either the 45 1.8, 60mm f2.8 macro or the 75mm.

I agree with the above ideas - what are you missing with the 12-35? I haven't used it but it seems like a fine lens and others have said it replaces their primes in that range for most purposes. You might get more bang for your buck looking at a wider or longer lens. I'd go longer myself - Oly 45mm or legacy 50mm for portraits, maybe a telephoto zoom?

Go with the 45 or 75. Both are very nice.

I was going to suggest the 45/1.8 as well. It's a real complement rather than a redundancy.

I have the P12/35 and it goes flawlessly with my P20.

Thanks everyone! I have a lot to think about. I still like the pocket-ability aspect of the 20mm. I may get that lens anyway and perhaps consider something else later. i.e. 45mm or 35-100 zoom. :)

My vote is for 45mm or 75mm. I don't have 75mm but I have 45mm. I love it... Great portrait lens and rather small/light and a different FOV from 12-35mm. Considered the 75mm heavily but went in another direction. Either lens should be a winner.

I just had the 12-35 and the 25 prime. I sold the 25 (great lens but just redundant for me since the 12-35 is so great) and ordered the oly 75 (it comes thursday!). I have an old leica summilux that I shoot at 50 otherwise I would of probably picked up the oly 45 to go with the 12-35.

    Just my 2c though.

Forget the numbers: how do you "see?" And, what kind of shooting do you do? I shoot street, and If I had only one lens, and it was my 14mm f2.5 Panasonic pancake, I'd be quite happy. If I could also have a 100mm f2 prime, I'd be ecstatic. Notice there are no zooms in my list. For what I do, they are too slow. Zooms are highly overrated.

I've been wondering the same question as the OP.

Ideally I'd like a prime that is faster than the p12-35 and something smallish. I'm leaning towards the oly 17mm 1.8 . I'm also considering the oly 45mm 1.8, but I feel that this focal length is a bit more specialised and would see less general use.
