Long exposure NR?

    I'm curious how it works on Panasonics? Specifically the GH2...

    My interpretation of Long Exposure Noise Reduction (or dark-frame subtraction) was that the camera took a second exposure equal to the first, with the shutter closed, and then used this to map out and remove 'hot' pixels from the first exposure. So in a way no actual 'noise reduction' as such is being carried out.

    However, looking at long exposure RAW files out of my GH2 (10" - 60") it appears to also be actively removing noise, which is turn is smoothing out quite a bit of detail...

    Could someone please explain this process to me?
