Spot the sleepy lizard, a large Australian skink (AKA pinecone lizard, blue-tongue lizard, stumpy-tail). This pale-coloured specimen was, perhaps, about a foot long, and wasn't warm enough to move away from me.

This handsome dragon lizard turned a darker tone as we hung around, snapping like the paparazzi.

A bit further along the track, we encountered this reasonably-large monitor, which scampered up the nearest gum tree. We don't often see these, they tend to stay away from people-places - this was in national parkland.

And to think when I was young these were very common over six feet in length mostly, but sadly in the country around dams they were shot out in a lot of places

Always find those stories sad.
They are such interesting and beautiful creatures.
We stayed in a tent at Carnarvon Gorge decades ago with 2 young kids.
One day a huge monitor came flying along and through the tent under the ground sheet. In one end out the other.
It all happened so quickly.
Amazing experience.
(that was one of the most memorable experiences staying in that park. It's got so much to look at.
Back then the ranger gave me tips on how and where to go. You wouldn't get that today.)

What an incredible story, and memory, to have! Hopefully no-one had time to feel afraid. We always hear the warning to not be in their path to safety, or they'd run up to your head. Same with the much smaller dragon lizards. I mean, I like them, but I don't want one to climb up me!

We were just standing around and saw it coming and I was aware not to cross its path so just watched.
We often wondered if we'd pitched our tent over its pathway.
Just as wallabies have "runs" I wonder if these are similar?
