...to improve the state of literacy.

Stopped in at the architectural salvage yard this weekend and spotted a pile of these newspaper boxes from a local daily that stopped printing a few years back (it went to a web-only model). We've been wanting to set up a Little Free Library for a while and this struck me as the perfect solution. It's already weatherproofed and ready to go and I really like the poetry inherent in using this symbol of the decline of the newspaper publishing industry to promote reading.

    Great idea!

(If folks call the number on the front of the box do they get home delivery of the free books?).

A little while back a guy in Detroit (Charles Molnar) decided to create bus stop benches and stock 'em with a shelf of free books.

Of course he caught the usual flack from the bureaucrats-that-be; however the idea was so popular with the citizenry that the City Engineers met with Mr. Molnar and gave him the specs on how the benches should be installed. He's cleared to go on the project .

Of course to bring it into the 21st century ya'll should be stocking the free library with free Kindles....

    The present.
Stencil these with "Little Free Library" so people are clear about the fact that it is not a hold over to the junk yard. Great idea. Bravo.
