What on earth has happened to the lens rumour mill?

I am desparately awaiting Olympus to announce a fast standard zoom to complete my kit wishlist.

I am having a lot of fun with the 12-50 and sometimes only a zoom will do. But it doesn't quite cut it after using the amazing primes available.

I've considered the Panny 12-35 over and over but I object to paying such a high price to include IS which I don't want or need. It is also bound to be heavier than an equivalent Oly lens.

This is the only lens I'm waiting on. 12-50 f/2.8 and sharp, I'd essentially be a one-lens guy.

Yeah, the lens price is absolutely not because of IS. Note that 100-300mm is less expensive than 70-300mm. 12-35 is expensive because it's wide, as sharp as a prime, and compact for what it is (but mainly because that's the price people are willing to buy it at).

Go buy it now rather than waiting for an indeterminate time for a unicorn.

I had just the same thoughts as OP but then before a trip I really needed the 12-35 and bought it. What a lens! I could easily use it for 90% of all my photos.

But, for topic. I would really like the old 12-60/2.8-4 in m43-format!! Please Olympus make that one!!

I just read some Schneider rumours on 43R:
(FT5) Delay on the Schneider MFT lens release. | 43 Rumors

Hmm, once again a manufacturer comes with lenses close the existing ones...

14/2.0 (there are the Pan 14/2.5 already, or Sam 16/2.0 or Oly 12/2.0)
30/1.4 (there are the PL 25/1.4, or Sigma 30/2.8)
60/2.4 Macro (there are the Oly 60/2.8 macro)

maybe these are really high end but anyways, I don't feel tempted. A longer macro or tele would have been nice though.

Where did you see this focal range mentioned? I have seen rumors of 12-40/2.8 and 40-150/2.8 fast zooms. The 12-40/2.8 was expected this summer.

My own experience is that Olympus likes to introduce their fast standard pro zooms with new flagship bodies.

The 60/2.4 macro would be interesting if it can match/beat its Zuiko Digital counterpart at resolution & contrast. That will not be easy since the ZD 60/2.8 has world class resolution/contrast. If the Schneider manages to trump it, the extra half stop of brightness can be very useful in the macro world where every photon can be needed.

    :thiagree:

There are patents for both constant f/2.8 and f/2.8-4 for both these focal ranges. I'd rather believe the latter rumor TBH, since constant zooms would be super expensive. Bear in mind that Olympus doesn't have a :43: over $1000 IIRC.

Oly also might gamble with the rumored "hybrid camera" and the promise of good native performance with older FT lenses.

That said, apart from these two zooms, there are strong rumors for some time now about a 25mm f/1.8 and also a 150mm f/2.8.

I haven't seen any specific rumor that it'll be 12-50mm. I just like the kit lens range a lot - if it was faster and a little sharper it'd be ideal. 12-40 would be close.

+1, fast wide prime is what I am longing for, not bothered if oly or pany. A 10mm 2.8 or even 3.5 if its was a pancake
