I was doing some research for a little project I'm working on and I came across reference to an "L" version of the original Olympus 14-42 kit zoom.

It's clear to me that lenses printed with the name "14–42mm 1:3.5–5.6 L ED" existed. I've seen more than one photo of such a lens. I've also seen images of this lens without the "L". Both versions seem to be identical and they're distinct from the later "II" and "II R" versions of this lens.

I'm assuming there is no functional difference between the "L" and "non-L" lenses, but I'm curious if anyone recalls this anomaly and/or if anyone has a clue what the "L" might signify. I know this is trivia in the extreme, but I can't tamp down my curiosity.

Apparently it was the kit lens with the E-PL1. I recall reading about it when I was getting into m43. A little searching brought up this page:

Awesome, thanks @SVQuant ! I even looked at that Wikipedia page (and even linked it above), but never bothered to look at the Talk page. Heck, I've even owned a copy of this lens and never noticed the "L".

Mystery solved: it seems "L" stands for Lightweight.

BTW, love the m43 wiki project.
