I visited the 339-acre Kinzua Bridge State Park, located in Pennsylvania, home of the reinvented Kinzua Viaduct.

The Viaduct, once the longest and tallest railroad structure at 2,053 feet long and 301 feet high, was partially destroyed by a tornado during 2003. It’s so high you could fit the Statue of Liberty underneath it. I hiked the ½ mile trail down to the debris field in the valley to explore. To try and recover the downed steel trestle was not cost worthy, so they just left it down there.

Reinvented as a pedestrian walkway during 2011, visitors can stroll 600 feet out on the remaining support towers, peer miles out into the Kinzua Gorge, and gaze down through the partial glass platform at the end of the walkway. A bonus was a passing brown bear down near the debris field I saw from the top.

Nice. I was there when it was still standing. I’m hoping to get back in the future.

Thus demonstrating one reason I'm a massive fan of a certain computer game.

(Bonus points: Identify the animal in that picture)

Sadly the game doesn't include proper ISO or shutter speed controls so I can't expose correctly for conditions. But the prettiness..

I am of course jealous nonetheless that you get to enjoy such scenery in person, let alone actual live wild bears.

@Cederic - Is that photo you link to the Kinzua structure before the damage?

@Zman - that set deserves both a "Winner" and a "Wow."

The closest sort of structural collapse I can think of was the radio telescope in Green Bank WV which collapsed in 1988.
