is the Oly 40-150 f2.8 worth waiting?

Given the track record of 12-40 vs 12-35, is it also safe to say that the 40-150 will be better than the current 35-100 by panny?

i'm looking for something to replace my canon 70-200 f2.8L IS+6D combo, to be used on my e-pl5..

In terms of focal length, 12-40 vs 12-35 isn't that different, but the extra 50 mm at the longer end of a 40-150 vs 35-100 makes the two longer lenses less comparable.

Personally, I am waiting for the Oly lens for a few reasons:

- I really want the longer reach
- I have an Oly camera with IBIS, so I prefer a non-stabilized lens
- I don't have any budget left for camera gear until the end of the year :smile:

I have the 35-100 Pana BUT I wanted more reach (also contemplated waiting waiting waiting) so just bought a 50-200 Zuiko SWD off ebay. Should arrive soon.

The 12-35 and 12-40 are different. The Oly is sharper at the wide and the Panny is sharper at the long end.

The 35-100 is far smaller than the 40-150 is going to be. A better comparison would be the Oly 40-150 vs the 50-200.

The 35-100 is much smaller. The 40-150 will have 50mm more reach and a function button. FWIW I carry E-M1, 12-40 and 35-100 everywhere and only carry the 50-200 when I know I'll need it. But that's just me. Even the 50-200 is smaller than CanonConvert's 70-200.

The 40-150 is one of the reasons Im shooting with a GH4 now over DSLR I used to shot with. The build of the 12-40 blew me away so I know this lens will be the same and so far the AF speed of the 45mm is great though Im told the 12-40 is faster so If thats true and the 40-150 is just as fast it will be great for sports and wildlife.

I picked up the 35-100/2.8 recently and really love it, the 40-150/2.8 looks to be about twice the size/weight or possibly more. The rumored price of around $1300 looks right, but I can't really think of any reason why I would want this over the 35-100, but I have the 75-300 when I really want the reach. If that 100-150mm range is important to you, I could see this being a very nice lens.

I'm waiting for the Oly 40-150 but only so I can compare the two side by side. I currently have only 2 lenses, the 12-40 and the 60 macro. I plan on filling out my kit with a longer prime or zoom and one fast, preferably wide, prime.

For me, it'll probably come down to a compromise. The compromise for the longer reach of the Oly is size and weight. Obviously, the compromise for the small size and relatively low weight of the 35-100 is less reach. Naturally, price will be a factor but only if the the two lenses have similar optical quality.

Wait for the Olympus, because Olympus and Canon lenses zoom in the same direction. The longer reach of the Olympus is an advantage. The visible, vs. measurable, differences will be insignificant.

FWIW - I am looking forward to this lens. This will be the lens that will probably push me over the edge and purchase the E-M1. I have multiple bodies, just not the E-M1.

I spent yesterday afternoon using only my 40-150 f/4.0-5.6 and I was very happy with the photos I shot. If the new 40-150 f/2.8 will focus closer than the old one then I will absolutely be eagerly awaiting it's arrival.

For the 40-150mm a lot will depend on the size and weight and if it can replace the 35-100 and 50-200mm for my purposes. I place almost as much importance on my entire system as well as individual lenses.

I weighed the 12-35, 12-40, and 12-60mm lenses and ended up buying the 12-40mm. I do somewhat miss the extra 20mm of the 12-60 but the size and weight won out. I can easily see where the 12-40 and 40-150 lenses could meet the needs of many.

The 35-100mm is a very nice lens with a considerable weight and size advantage over the 50-200mm SWD and compliments the 12-40mm very nicely. Yet I have kept the 50-200mm for when I need the reach. So this is a wait and see but I think the 40-150mm lens would have to be one of the best lenses Olympus has ever produced for me to move to it.

If the Pro model will allow to zoom 1:2 so we can get 1:1 ratio, it will be huge benefit.

Wanted to get myself the 75-300mm but when it doesn't offer 1:2 as does 4/3 70-300mm it was no go.

12-40mm focus so close that it opens many possibilities. Sometimes composing so tightly that when I look camera I notice I have lens hood touching subject almost.

I'll have probably put in enough time with the kit 14-42 and 40-150 lenses by the time the 40-150 f2.8 hits stores in Canada that I can make effective use of my E-M10 with better optics. Hopefully a better deal for the 12-40 f2.8 and the 40-150 f2.8 together will be forthcoming at a local shop than the getolympus.com-dictated 'discount' Olympus prices that stores seem to slavishly use.
