I the Panny 14-42 (the original, not the new X) known to be soft at the long end? If so, is there any quick remedy, like turning off the OIS?

Don't know how soft exactly it is for you, but it's known the long end isn't as good as Olympus 14-42's. Do the images seem to be blur? Anyway I think you should try without OIS.

Not really soft, but it's better to stop it down to f/6.3 to improve sharpness at 42mm.
