The typical metal used to to make such items is T-6061 aircraft craft-grade aluminum which will oxidize and corrode with repeated exposure to moisture. As such, anodizing, a thin layer of protective substance, is chemically bonded to the metal to protect it from the elements.

Anodizing comes in a few grades. Type I is typically used in camera lens filters. While it will prevent oxidation, it will wear over time; leaving the bare metal exposed eventually.

Brass, which will also oxidize and corrode, is also used in such applications where rotational movement is required [(one part of the filter is stationary while the moving part is of another type of metal such as brass to prevent galling (same metal surface moving against the same metal type)].
