Is 1/8000 shutter speed an absolute must?

Not sure why we don't have them (I know very little of how the guts of a camera work) but how it worked on the GR and X100 was brilliant....either dedicated button for full user control or simply set to kick in 'auto' once SS maxes out.

As if this implementation wasn't wonderful enough, you got the added bonus of never having concern yourself with odd reflections and light bouncing around behind a tradition filter etc etc.

It is definitely no absolute must and I have never needed it until recently when I bought a camera with shorter shutter speeds than 1/4000s. Since then I have used even shorter shutter speeds than 1/8000s (my GM1 has 1/16000 as shortest shutter speed).
