Ok, so was on the verge of upgrading my GF1 but my iphone 3Gs died so I pretty much had to upgrade to the iphone 5.

Roll forward a couple of days and I've just arrived in Florence. I have to say the camera on this thing looks pretty awesome, especially in HDR mode.

On saying that I've only viewed pictures on the phone itself which a brilliant retina view screen screen so I might be in for a big disappointment!!!

It surely is n't going to be good enough for me to sell the u4/3 stuff, surely!!!!

I'll try to post pictures later.....

I've been using my iPhone 4S a lot for photography. It's brilliant, for what it is!

Download the 645pro app. It allows you to shoot max quality Jpegs, as well as uncompressed Tiffs. You have to download the Tiff files through iTunes. But, each file is about 23 megs, from my iPhone. Then, process as you wish on your computer. I enlarged one to 11x14, and no one I showed it to guessed it was from my iPhone.

I also shoot a lot of HDR with it, but I don't use the native camera app, it doesn't seem to do much in HDR mode.

In the hands of a competent photographer, it makes great pictures -- even before the iPhone 5. It's limited of course by what you can do with a very small sensor -- but you can create around limitations like that.

If you haven't checked out Chase Jarvis book "The Best Camera" then do so. The subtitle is, of course, "Is the one you have with you" and it is all iPhone photography by him.

Sorry if I wasn't clear. 645pro doesn't have HDR at this time. I use that as my primary photo app because of the Tiffs.

I use iCameraHDR, Pro HDR and one just called HDR, for my HDR apps. The developer of 645pro said he wasn't sure if he could do an HDR feature, so that may not come to it. It's still the best camera app out there, in my opinion.

iPhone 5 user here too. Just got a new one from Apple because the last one had some dust under the lens cover and was showing up in my images. Gotta love the Apple warranty: make an appointment with Genius, show up at the store, walk out with new phone.

I actually prefer the simplistic built-in Camera app. It takes all of the other things out of it and you just need to focus and capture. It's a great backup and party camera.

There isn't much difference between the camera on iPhone 5 and iPhone 4S. Both are 8 megapixels, f/2.4, backside illuminated sensor. iPhone 5 just has a smaller unit, and has a sapphire crystal lens cover. Neither changes affect image quality.

I used my iPhone exclusively for photography for over a year while I was saving up for an X100. Paired with an Olloclip and a mophie battery pack and I usually got the shot that I was looking for. My go to apps are Camera+, 645Pro, Hipstamatic, and Hueless. Actually I think I use Hueless more than any of them.

It's actually amazing what smartphone cameras are capable of these days. I my first iPhone was a 3GS which had an OK camera but the camera on my 4S is every bit as good as any point and shoot as long as there is enough light. My daughter took some pics at Disney World last year with her 4S and I couldn't tell the difference between them and those from my Sony HX9V.

It certainly won't replace your :43: equipment but for something that you always have with you, they take excellent photos.

It's been raining pretty much since I arrived in Florence on monday night and I cannot believe my luck in that it is forecast to rain until after I leave on SUNDAY!!!!!!!

So, here are a couple of shots from the iPhone 5 camera.

I plan to make at least two excursions and compare the GF1 14/20/45 and iphone side-by-side. I might even go as far as having a couple of shots printed at 10 x 8 or 12 x 10 (I hardly ever print and even then do 7 x 5 and most of those go directly to my mum!!!). These were taken at a rainy dusk yesterday. Here's a thing, the iphone save the normal and hDR shots side-by-side and I'm struggling to tell a big difference.

One way i don't see it competing is in the shaloow depth of field and lovely bokeh that I get form my Oly 45, or is there an app for that??

(I would have though it would be relatively easy to identify the subject and smudge everything else!!)

Will never happen. 33mm effective focal length @ f/2.4 vs. 90mm @ f/1.8. Software won't get you there.

I just did it, but not very well, using an app called tadaa. I could isolate the subject using parallel bars or ovals etc and then make the rest of the picture blurred. It would have looked really good, had i not been spoilt by the output from my 45, good job i don't have a 75 I guess!!!

Hmm I don't know how to articulate this but tilt-shift and shallow depth of field are related concepts but aren't the same thing.

If you like the effects tadaa is giving you. Awesome. It's a great app.
