'Indianos' was the name given to emigrants from Spain (mainly the northern provinces) who emigrated to 'America' (which in Spain means Central and South America) from about 1875 till the 1930s to make their fortune. They went mainly to Mexico, Cuba, Argentina, Brasil and Venezuela. If they were lucky and became rich they came back and built ostentatious houses to show off their wealth. As they had usually come from quite humble beginnings in small villages there are many of these houses dotted around the Asturian countryside. These are about 10 km from where I live.
Apart from wanting to show off these 'Indianos' were very generous to their old villages and frequently founded hospitals, old people's homes and schools and brought in electricity and running water.
