Doesn't Panasonic offer Focus Bracket where you get full res RAW which you can merge in post?

Yes it does. I've just tried it on my GX80 and it works better than "Post focus photo stacking". I merged them in Combine ZP and worked fine without the artefacts I got with the upgrade method.

I noticed those artefacts as well, its the same artefacts caused by 'focus breathing' when I tried to do stacking on my own. So I was disappointed to see it in all the demo videos I saw on the net touting the stack features of the G80
