In and Around Vancouver by Night

Discussion in 'Scenic, Architecture, and Travel' started by fotogaffer, May 7, 2016.

  1. My wife and I recently spent some time on the West Coast to visit my daughter in Vancouver. For some reason, I'm always drawn to urban photography at night. Here are some shots in and around Vancouver from that trip at night. These were taken with the E-M5 II and mostly Voigtlander 17.5 mm, and perhaps a couple with the same camera and the Oly 7-14 PRO. Although the main draw of the Voigtlander is the f 0.95, I like it mostly for the starburst stopped down.

What aperture are you stopping down to, to get those stars?

Vancouver looks great! A pity that I haven't been there since Expo '86 :shakehead:

  4. @hazwing@hazwing - these were shot at f11.

@jimr.pdx@jimr.pdx - Thanks Jim. Hey, I was also at Expo '86. Maybe you were the only other guy I saw there with a Pentax camera?!?! Do I recognize your "handle" from the Pentax forums?

Hmm, probably ME Super, not sure if I had the 24-50 at the time.. :) and yes, even though I'm an hour from PDX now. I started a Longviewer handle here but then found my old password. I need to sort out my identity issues!

Those are great! I visited Vancouver with family, and never took the opportunity to wander the city at night. What a great view of a beautiful city. Would love to spend more time there.

    Love the stars too!

My sister lives in Vanouver, WA. I always have to tell people, "Uh, no it's not that Vancouver, it's the other one." :)

These are some nice shots, and I remember Vancouver as a great city (although I didn't get to shoot it at night).
One humble suggestion, if I may, and as someone who also enjoys long exposures in the city, is that I think the lights and reflections would really pop against the cobalt blue sky of dusk rather than the black of night. (Your first image just caught the tail end of dusk light.) But that's a personal preference and not to detract from your images which are great. Well done :)
    Best wishes,

  9. Totally appreciate what you're saying regarding blue hour vs night time shooting. You have posted numerous stunning photos on this site. Thanks for your kind words and taking the time to comment.

Wonderful pictures and great use of the Voigt! I had the 42.5 Voigt but never got the 17.5 - you're making me think I need one :)

I enjoy these, but I really love the Gastown Flat Iron image. The perspective is really inviting to my eye, and the placement of the pattern in the crossing lights within the composition is in such great balance with the rest of the elements.

Great capture, and thanks for sharing.

Wonderful night shots! Must have been a really still night since the long exposures still showed the trees well!

  14. @mpresley@mpresley Thanks. I'm sure you'd like the Voigt 17.5. Kind of a special purpose lens for me though.

@kidrussell@kidrussell Thanks for your thoughtful reply and kind comments!

@successboat@successboat Thanks. It was a pretty still night indeed.

@PakkyT@PakkyT Thanks. Okay you asked for it. Here is a shot of the Gastown steam clock. Unfortunately, it had just finished steaming during which time I couldn't get near it for all the other lookers.

Much better. I believe it is an actual law in Gastown that you are not allowed to take photos there unless you include the Steam Clock. Really, it is... ;)
