Does anyone from the UK have experience of importing camera equipment from foreign lands, e.g the US? Looking at the prices, the numbers after the £ sign appear to be roughly the same as the numbers after the $ sign, so an immediate benefit if tax isn't added by customs. Just wondering whether its worth it, given import duties and VAT.

pricing's nothing like as clear cut as it used to be
duty is your responsibility - if you are looking to avoid it you will have to be careful about who's handling the shipping

there will be items that even when you add the duty - work to (item + postage) + 20% + £10 handling they work out a good saving; and there will be others where even without duty the savings are, at best, marginal!

I'd personally look at Digitalrev if you are looking to import from abroad. Digitialrev include all import duty and VAT and ship from Japan. The prices vary though and can work out more expensive than the UK, however lens such as the Panasonic 12-35 and 35-100 work out around £200 cheaper! Importing from the US you will be liable for 20% VAT and perhaps 10% duty, then you need to factor in the Royal Mail handling fee. I think you would need to factor in an additional 30% on top of the advertised US pricing, which you would need to pay to Royal Mail before they will release the item.
