It's too early to really ask about the Olympus 12-40, so I wanted to ask instead about the comparison between the 14-54--a lens I have and love--and the 12-35. Of course, AF on m4/3 bodies with the 14-54 is fairly slow and not quiet, I'm certain the 12-35 wins on these grounds. And I have no doubt that the 12-35 is smaller and lighter than the 14-54. And I also know that on the used market the 12-35 goes for more than twice as much.

The critical question is: what is the comparison between the two regarding image quality? I think the 14-54 has fine resolution, but at some focal lengths, at certain apertures, the OOF background is very busy and distracting, almost like a mirror lens. What annoying quirks does the 12-35 have?

I love the 12-35 lens and it doesn't have any quirks that bother me, the IQ is excellent. I would say its better than the 14-54, I've had both versions of the 14-54 in my 4/3 days and while it's a good lens it never really floated my boat where as I love the 12-35. The 14-54 lens to me just lacked something, the photos never really stood out, I preferred the 12-60 and I'd rate the 12-35 at least as good as the 12-60 in IQ.
