Image averaging and Darktable

I have always been interested in HDR processing, but have never liked the results. Still playing around with it. I saw a tutorial on Image Averaging vs HDR and I'm interested in trying that out. Anybody here have any experience with it?
The tutorial used Photoshop (which I don't have) to create layers from several bracketed exposures, then averaged them to get a final image with much more dynamic range. The end result was not perfect, but a lot more natural looking than HDR.
Question is: can this be done with Darktable? I think it can be done with Gimp but I am not familiar enough with it yet.
