a choice of the new Fujifilm x100s or a new Olympus EPL-5 with VF2 and Panasonic Lumix 25mm lens, and told to take one with you on a trip to London to take pictures for a week, given what you know about each, which would you choose?

Depends on what you want to see in London. You're comparing a 35mm equiv lens to a 50mm equiv, with a 1-stop advantage going to the PL25.

I did the trip two summers ago with an E-620, 50mm/2 macro and 11-22mm. I should have done the trip with the 14-54 only. Anyway, live and learn.

If I did the trip again, I'd take the 12-50 and get the PL-25 as low-light backup. Scrap the VF-2, because the tilt-screen is going to be much more useful.

I mostly shoot 50mm FL (135 equiv.), so to push myself I'd consider taking the X100s. You can't go wrong with either combination IMO.

Yep, that's why I'd pick the X100s and go a little wide. It's fun to bring in variety at times.

It really depends on what types of shooting you think you're going to be doing, but I think if those were my only choices, I'd go for the smaller size of the X100s. However, I'd really prefer an in-between option: the E-PL5 + P20.

X100s since you will be bringing only one camera body (and lens), may as well make it a very versatile machine.

Don't forget that high sync leaf shutter - amazing!

Given only those choices, for a European city, I think that the wider lens of the X100s would win out for me. The close quarters of such a city would make 50mm equiv. a bit limiting for me. That said, I'd go for an E-PL5 +P20, or E-PL5 + PL25 + P14 over either of your initial choices.

I prefer 35mm for lifestyle photography so I would take the X100s. But if that was the P20, I would probably take the E-PL5

I am a big fan of the 25mm - so I would choose the E-PL5. I'm also used to using Olympus cameras so I'm familiar with the menus and controls.
