The spikes works as a "spacer" between the blades and skin, so the cutting length can be set (by motor, in this case between 0,4 and 12mm, if you believe the setting increments...).
Here display shows length set to 4,2mm, 26min of battery operation left:

Of such type I have two, one of them indeed for pets, the other one not.

Normally I use both types: first with linear blades and then finish with the rotary ones. This works for me the easiest and quickest.

They also go by needle hammer ("młotek igłowy" where I live ? ), or needle descaler.
