It's something that opens up. The silver thing in the middle appears to be a friction screw. Beyond that, I got nothing.

Some hints for the "object":
- it has a digital display,
- the silver part indeed can be called friction screw, and makes the use of the "object" easier (although it is not crucial for the usage).

But you have a good eye, spotting the buttons: white, green, yellow. There is one more (black), but difficult to spot because it's recessed.
As mentioned, this one is digital version, but it does not have to be digital.
