"Shoe shine machine" is a great guess--I see the resemblance, but no.

I can't really expand it without it being a giveaway. Hints: Everything roundish to the right side of the image is metal. Compared to how it is normally seen, it is not in great shape.

Not a joystick or trackball. While still in service everywhere, these predate either of those.

The narrow part is a good bit thicker than the shaft of either of the buttons. The far right part is close to 2" in diameter.

So it’s not a kitchen item, not automotive, not a pipe or related to pipes.

Is it a household item? Or is this a commercial item?

So a commercial use item, still in service today. Has something kind of to do with water. Are there multiple of these buttons? And are we looking at the furthest depressed or extended position of this one?

And would we find this in a retail establishment?

The connection to water is essential but indirect. One button per device. This is default position, which is extended. The device is common in retail establishments; to further clarify, it would be uncommon in a residence.
flush lever on a crapper
Doesn't flush.

Bowling ball cleaner.
Didn't see this one. Not related to bowling balls.

Soap dispenser.

I so want it to be a sprinkler head from a fire suppression system, but people don’t push them.
