My first thought is that I'm looking at a suboptimal outcome of some sort...

As to hints--we like to flounder about...
It sure looks like the finished product of two eggs easy over that my first ex wife used to cook for me,.. once.
Carbon brush?

Whatever it is, my condolences.
I will say that suboptimal outcome is kind of right.
No cooking involved.
Not a brush of any kind. A lot harder.

I've asked for a plug, and it was denied.

For me it's difficult to recognize a broken thing. Need some sleep maybe 🙂

A plug to me is something like a wooden pin that you put into a hole to seal it.
A spark plug is of course set into a hole but is something else in my mind.
I would not think of a spark plug when the word plug is used.
No, this is not a spark plug.
But we are getting warm!

Not an ink pad or stamp.

For me plug is also an oil plug, a glow plug, probably more technical plugs. But not being a native, I probably take it wrong.
Anyway, I accept it's not a plug.

Being a kind of a tech monkey, I can't remove oil / carbon residue vision from my head. Really need to sleep this over.

Is combustion involved with this object? Something that burns or is very hot?
No combustion, but it can be used in things that involves combustion.
Let me give a little clue: the diameter at its largest is about 10mm and the smallest about 5mm.
And let us use the word, at the butt end you find something like a star pattern.

Neither hex nor key, (hex - 2 is more like it).

Glow plug from a diesel?
Not a plug as been said earlier, not even a glow plug, we have already dispensed with things having to do with combustion or being very hot.

This thingamabob comes in various sizes and is used for a lot of purposes but mostly to hold things together.

New day, new ideas.
Philipps (Posidriv?) head screw.

Edit: Blurry background reminds me a bottom of screw head, like the ones used for comp chassis.
